European Food Safety Authority (EFSA)
The mission of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) is to ensure safety in the food chain, protecting human, animal and plant health, and the environment. EFSA provides independent and transparent scientific advice to policymakers and engages in open dialogue with society. The key values include excellence in rigorous risk assessments, independence through impartiality and cooperation through long-term partnerships for mutual benefit. EFSA strives to improve food safety from farm to fork while using resources effectively and responsibly.

Management Board
The Management Board (MB) is composed of 38 members and 36 alternates, nominated and appointed based on their relevant experience and expertise in the field of food chain law and policy, including risk assessment. Luxembourg is represented by the Luxembourg Veterinary and Food Administration (ALVA) and the Administration of Technical Agricultural Services (ASTA).
The board ensures that the Authority functions effectively and efficiently, delivers its mandate as defined in its founding Regulation and meets the expectations of European and national institutions, stakeholders and the public.

Advisory Forum
The Advisory Forum (AF) consists of delegates from the food safety authorities of the EU Member States, Iceland, and Norway. Each national authority is responsible for risk assessment of the food chain at national level, although specific responsibilities may differ across nations. Additionally, observers from Switzerland and the EU Candidate Countries participate in Advisory Forum meetings. Luxembourg is represented by the Luxembourg Veterinary and Food Administration (ALVA) and the Administration of Technical Agricultural Services (ASTA).
Through the Advisory Forum, Member States can advise EFSA on scientific matters and collaborations between Member states and EFSA are facilitated.

Scientific Networks
EFSA coordinates several scientific networksof nationally appointed EU Member State organisations with expertise in specific scientific fields. Representatives of the Commission and of other organisations (including those from outside the EU) with specific expertise may also be invited to participate in the work of EFSA’s networks.
Networks are chaired by EFSA and supported by relevant EFSA units. Their aim is to facilitate scientific cooperation in the field of EFSA’s mission by:
- coordinating scientific activities,
- exchanging information,
- developing and implementing joint projects,
- and exchanging methodologies, expertise and best practices.
Luxembourg delegates experts from the Luxembourg Veterinary and Food Administration (ALVA), the Administration of Technical Agricultural Services (ASTA), the Luxembourg Institute of Health (LIH), and the Luxembourg National Museum of Natural History (MNHNL) to participate in EFSA’s scientific networks.
Focal Point
EFSA Focal Points act as liaisons between EFSA and national food safety authorities. They facilitate the exchange of scientific information, coordinate activities, and support the implementation of joint projects. Additionally, they help raise EFSA's visibility and ensure effective communication and collaboration on food safety issues.
Under a multi‑annual agreement signed between the Luxembourg Veterinary and Food Administration (ALVA) and EFSA, ALVA serves as the Focal Point in Luxembourg for EFSA.
