Erucic acid

Erucic acid, an endogenous toxin, is an omega-9 monounsaturated fatty acid naturally present in oil-rich seeds from the brassica family of plants, in particular rapeseed and mustard. However, it could present a long-term health risk for children up to the age of 10 who consume large quantities of foods containing this substance.

Tests carried out on animals show that long-term absorption of oils containing erucic acid can lead to a heart condition known as myocardial lipidosis. This condition is temporary and reversible.
