Opium alkaloids (morphine, codeine)
Poppy seeds are obtained from the opium poppy (Papaver somniferum). They are used in baked goods, as food decoration, in cake fillings and desserts, and to produce edible oil. However, the seeds (which do not contain alkaloids by nature) can become contaminated with alkaloids as a result of insect damage or external contamination of the seeds during harvesting.
