Tropane alkaloids (atropine, scopolamine)

Tropane alkaloids are naturally occurring plant compounds. Certain tropane alkaloids can contaminate foodstuffs containing cereals. Maize, millet, buckwheat and sorghum in particular are affected by this contamination. Their toxicity makes them an undesirable substance that can have harmful effects on health. They can cause symptoms such as blurred vision, dilated pupils, dry mouth, palpitations and fatigue. People who have consumed contaminated products and experience these symptoms are advised to consult a doctor and report their consumption to him or her.
