Yersinia enterocolitica
Description and health hazards :
Yersinia enterocolitica infections cause acute gastroenteritis accompanied by fever, diarrhoea and abdominal pain. These usually appear 2 to 7 days after ingestion. The duration of symptoms may vary from 2 to 3 days, but in some cases they may last for several weeks. Severe infections can lead to complications (extraintestinal infections) which may require hospitalisation.
People who have consumed a contaminated product and are experiencing symptoms should seek medical advice and disclose their exposure. Symptoms may vary from person to person and may vary in severity depending on the extent of infection.
Which food products are concerned?
Yersiniosis is mainly associated with the consumption of raw or undercooked pork, raw milk products, contaminated vegetables such as bean sprouts and tofu, as well as contaminated water.
