Glycoalkaloids (α-solanine, chaconine)
Glycoalkaloids are potentially toxic substances commonly found in species of the Solanaceae family of plants such as potatoes, aubergines, tomatoes, peppers and chillies.
Glycoalkaloid poisoning can cause a bitter or burning sensation in the mouth, flu-like signs such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal and stomach cramps and diarrhoea. Anyone who has eaten the contaminated products and develops these symptoms is advised to consult a doctor.
